Last Thursday, during
a trip to Manhattan, we see an open rehearsal for the concert of the New York Philharmonic
at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.
From 1908 Mahler moved to New York and led the Metropolitan Opera, leadership shared with the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini. He produced the premiere of The Bartered Bride by Smetana and Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades. During this period, was charged with the direction of three concerts by the Symphony Society of New York. In February 1911 he gave his last concert at Carnegie while suffering a sore throat and a body temperature of 40 ° C. She was diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis, a disease of people with heart valve defects, and died May 11 in Vienna.
Therefore, her relationship with the city was intense in the last years of his life and only his death impided continuity. So Mahler was so associated with New York as with Vienna. The interpretation of the Philharmonic under the baton of Jaap van Zweden was brilliant. The piece is well suited to the splendor of a large symphony orchestra and with musicians like those it was exciting. When just the finale of the fourth movement the audience bursts into applause deserved, the conductor continued to refine some details with the orchestra.
Meanwhile the young Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is a prodigy of piano performance. The Prokofiev concerto is full of nuance and interpretation requires the rapid execution of complex chords in both hands and was a challenge for the interpreter. However, the Yuja Wang’s piano sounds lightweight, perfectly legatto and linked with the orchestra. It was a Wonderful listening.
